Rocherpan Nature Reserve

Rocherpan Nature Reserve is a coastal birding haven 25km north of Velddrif, on the West Coast. The prime feature is the large fresh water pan that attracts 183 species of birds.

The reserve is thus home to a great diversity of bird species. The abundance of birdlife is due to the combination of seasonal wetlands, coastal vegetation and marine environments. Together they provide ample opportunity for breeding and feeding to over 180 bird species.

Great White Pelicans as well as Greater and Lesser Flamingos, all listed in the Red Data book for endangered species, are often seen at Rocherpan alongside the rare African Black Oystercatcher. The reserve is also one of the most important breeding and moulting sites for the Cape Shoveler.

From June to September Southern Right Whales are sojourners in the rich coastal waters of the Atlantic and the Rocherpan Nature Reserve is home to many mammals, reptiles, amphibians and invertebrates.

What’s more, in spring a spectacular carpet of wild flowers covers large parts of the reserve. The beach extends into what seems like infinity, stretching from Laaiplek to Elands Bay, and long, leisurely walks are a popular activity.  Feel the breeze on your face and enjoy the solitude – definitely a wonderful opportunity for reflection and recharging the soul.

Angling from shore is allowed with the proper permits and there are also two bird hides, plus several picnic and braai areas.

Rocherpan Nature Reserve boasts newly refurbished eco-cottages: Kingfisher, Oystercatcher, Sandpiper and Flamingo - each named after bird species found on the reserve.  And the next phase of erecting additional accommodation has begun.

The eco-cottages are equipped with modern amenities, a fully-equipped kitchen with gas stove, fridge, microwave, toaster, kettle, crockery, cutlery, pots and pans, and a closed combustion fire place. The cottages sleep a maximum of four people, with a double bed and a futon in each cabin, bedding and linen included.  Each cottage has its own braai area with a picnic style table and chairs on the deck overlooking the reserve, perfect for bird watching.
